Rata and the Totata tree
Rata’s mother told him that she had found a magnificent Totara tree. Rata knew what his mother meant when she said this. He thought that he should make a waka out of it and go to seek answers about hi father’s murder. The next morning Rata went to find the Totara tree. It was tall and straight, just what his mother told him. Eager and excited he forgot to follow the tikanga. He picked up his stone adze and started to chop the tree. By the end of the day the tree began to topple. With one last strike it fell. The earth shook, then the earth went silent. Rata was exhausted, so he decided to leave the carving of his waka for the next day.
As soon as he left, the forest became alive with sound. The birds and insects rushed out to see the damage. The decided to put the tree back together. Several hours later the tree stood tall again.
The next morning Rata came back to the tree to finish off his work, astonished to see the tree standing. Feeling angry he began to chop once more. Once again he thought to leave it and went home, the animals put the tree back together. The next day he thought that he would chop down the tree, pretend to go home but actually hide behind a bush and wait to see what happens. Soon the animals emerged and started to put the tree together. Rata was furious, he jumped out from his hiding place and grabbed piwakawaka. He demanded an explanation. Piwakawaka explained that he hadn’t followed the tikanga and didn’t ask for permission. Suddenly the trees shook. The insects knew that it was Tanemahuta giving him permission to cut down the tree for a waka. Rata thanked him. The animals told Rata to go home, they would finish the waka. The next morning he returned to see his beautifully carved waka. He gave thanks again, and the set off on his quest.

I'll Never Forget The Time- writing
I’ll never forget the time when I sung in front of around one hundred people.
It was a peaceful Wednesday afternoon, the hall was packed and my hands were trembling. I was in the choir, but the last song I had to do a duet with my friend Teina.
We walked into the hall, forty other people and me. Teina and I sat at the front so that we get onto the stage easier. We all looked great in our performance gear. The presenter for the night was Mrs Strand, she introduced us. “Good afternoon everyone, tonight you will be in for a treat. Havelock North Primary School choir is going to be performing for you tonight. There will be nine songs sung, a duet, and a song for you all to sing along to. I hope you have a great night. Now let us begin!”
The night went on. Finally it was our turn. She introduced us. As I was walking up onto the stage, I nearly backed down from singing. When I was on stage I noticed that the microphone was a bit to high for me so they had to lower it (how embarrassing). My mind was going round in circles. My time was now. The choir began to sing, then the beat slowed and I knew it was our part. The teacher in front of me gave me a thumbs up. We began to sing. “You can count on me, like one, two, three and i’ll be there,cause I know when I need it. I can count on you like four, three, two and you’ll be there. Cause that’s what friends are supposed to do ohhh, yeah...” We sung for a bit longer and then walked down from the stage. I was so happy with myself. I had spotted my friends in the crowd and friends parents. I wasn’t afraid anymore. I was never going to forget this.

The Karamu Schnauzer Caper
It’s was beautiful day, there was dew on the grass and the ducks were chilling out on the stream. Dad and I were cycling down the track and Daisy(dog) was roaming free, chasing ducks and rolling around on the grass. Daisy stopped, as she saw one particular duck and chased it down to the river's edge dropping out of view in the long grass.
Meanwhile dad and I slowly cycled on. Until we realised Daisy had gone missing… We thought she might have gone to play with other dogs, but there were still other possibilities flying round in my head. We started walking our bikes back down the track, but still no sign of her. The thought of her going missing worried me. I knew she would come back if she ran away. So we just kept looking.
Suddenly I heard a yelp, it was a dog. A surge of happiness struck me. “It might be her,” I shouted to Dad. He came over and we went searching where the noise was coming from. I looked up and down the bank, and then I found her stuck, trying to climb up the stream side. She had fallen in the stream, but had just held onto the grassy edge. I screamed out to dad “She’s over here, come quickly!” he dropped his bike and raced over. She was just on the water edge and couldn’t climb her way up it.

Longfin eel
For the last couple of week we have had to create a report about an animal of the teacher's choice. I was told to do longfin eel. Here is the report:
I’m going to explain to you the amazing features of a Longfin Eel. The Longfin Eel has many unusual features such as how it breathes and what it looks like.
The Longfin Eel is a long, tubular-looking creature. It is the largest freshwater eel species. They are usually either dark brown or greyish black. On very rare occasions a Longfin Eel may be bright yellow. They live in the pools of streams. A pool is a deep, cold and slow area of a river.
In Autumn the adult eels leave freshwater and swim from New Zealand to tropical seas somewhere in the South Pacific. This is the start of their life process. The female lays their eggs, and the male fertilizes them. The adults then die after spawning. Then the eggs hatch into larvae and they float back to New Zealand.
The Longfin Eel’s breathing process is very interesting. What happens is they pump water over their gills and they take in the oxygen from that water before pumping it out of their body.
The Longfin Eel has a very large mouth with rows of tiny, sharp teeth. They use them to break down their food so they can eat things such as worms, insect larvae, fresh-water crayfish and even ducklings.
The last thing you need to know is how the eels have been affected and how you can help. As we know the people of the world have been polluting our rivers, for example plastic bags in the water or chemical waste. Pollution in the water is making an unsafe environment for the Longfin Eels and other marine life to live.

Water Cycle Explanation

Today I am going to explain to you about the water cycle and what happens. The water cycle takes the water and moves it up into the clouds and is moved around the earth.
The first thing that happens in the water cycle is transpiration/collection.
Transpiration is the word for plants drying out as the water is evaporated. Transpiration is really the collection of water from plants, puddles, streams etc. It then enters the atmosphere and is ready for the next stage.
The next step is evaporation. Evaporation happens when the water from plants, puddles etc. becomes hot by the sun and rises into the sky up to the clouds. That is called evaporation.
Now the water is in the clouds it can condensate. This means the water vapour cools down and turns into liquid. That is called condensation.
The last step is Precipitation. This means that the rain drops get big & drop back into the water. The main forms of precipitation is drizzle, rain, snow, hail and sleet.
That is the Water Cycle, transpiration/collection, evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
Also other different cultures have a different type of water cycle idea. Such as the Maori culture, they have created a legend called Ranginui and Papatuanuku.
Ranginui is the sky father and Papatuanuku is the earth mother.

Class trip to Wellington
This week our class went to Wellington. It was awesome. We went to see Te papa, Parliament & the pools.
At Parliament we saw the debating chamber, the Treaty of Waitangi and other things. We also went to
Te papa to see Gallipoli Scale Of War Memorial and then for an hour we got to look around. We saw the Maori Marae, the Earthquake House and Bush City. Also at Te Papa I took many photos on my Instax camera.

Geese lessons
As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an ‘uplift’ for the birds to follow. By flying in a ‘V’ formation, the whole flock adds 71% extra flying range.
Lesson: People who share a sense of community can HELP each other get where they are going more easily - because they are traveling on the TRUST of one another.
This means to our group: Help & trust each other in everything we do!
When a goose falls out of formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back to take advantage of the lifting power of the birds in front.
Lesson: if we have as much sense as geese we stay in formation with those HEADED where we want to go. We are willing to accept their HELP and GIVE our help to others - because they are traveling on the TRUST of one another
This means to our group: Let people help us and help others.
When the lead goose tries, it drops back into formation and another goose steps into the position.
Lesson: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks. We should Respect and protect each other's unique arrangement of skills, capabilities, talents and resources.
What it means to our group: we need to take turns and respect each other. Also share.
The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up with there speed
Lesson: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement Production is much greater. Individual empowerment results in quality HONKING!!!
What this means to our group: we have to encourage each other in everything we do.
When a goose gets sick, 2 geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it
Lesson: If we have as much sense as geese we will STAND by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.
What this means to our group: we should stand by each other when we are sad.

Letter To Select Committee
To the select committee
To the select committee. I think that schools should not be an hour longer. If we had an extra hour teachers would not be able to do lesson plans for the week and they would get home really late.
If school ended at 4:30 people on the bus won’t get home till dark. Though it is partly a good idea because it would mean kids would not get homework. The other problem is after school some kids have sport and some start earlier than others.

“Should we or should we not?” I said to Tiffany.
“Well if we want to be daredevils then yes,” Tiffany shouted. I thought for a moment, just standing there wondering if sliding down this thin, long shortcut would be a good idea.
I looked at Tiffany, she nodded ,so we started walking. But then suddenly Tiffany realised that it was nearly a 90 degrees slope. We fell on our butts and started sliding down a rocky, bumpy hill. Dirt was flicking on our faces. Down.. Down.. Down.
Till I spotted a prickle just up ahead.
I shouted out to Tiffany, “watch out” but it was too late, her hand had just been planted right on top of the pointy little prickle.
I was looking back at Tiffany to see if she was ok, She said, “I’m alright”.
I turned back around and saw the end on the short cut.
Tiffany and I didn’t realise that it just ended as a drop.
I tried to stop myself before it ended but it was too late. I fell and landed on the actual track on my but. I yelled “Tiffany Stop” but she didn’t hear me instead she landed right next to me.
